Cob resources

Looking for more info on cob? I've done some research over the past year and a half and collected some links, so here are some of the great resources I've found.

Natural Building 101
If you've never heard of cob, visit here first

Books:

First and foremost I would seriously recommend buying the book
The Hand Sculpted House by Ianto Evans
This book goes into a lot of detail, about floors, roofs, if cob is right for your climate, floor plans, construction, roofing, natural finishes.

Another great book is Becky Bee's
The Cob Builder's Handbook

(it's also available online for reading)

Websites:

These are websites or articles about people who built their own cob house. It's so interesting reading them. Some people only spent a few thousand dollars on their awesome cob houses. It's encouraging reading about their stories and how they did it, most of these people had no construction experience whatsoever.

A Hobbit House on Natural Home Magazine
Amazing article. He used mostly reclaimed materials and did most of the work himself, and created a beautiful house.
This house is in Austin, TX.

A Low Impact Woodland Home
Filled with plans, whys, how tos, and photos, great great website.

The Year of Mud: Building a Cob House

Love this blog. So interesting to read his experience over the year of building his house.

Rod Rylander's Hobbit House
pretty awesome house
The Hobbit House Farmstead
written by Rod Rylander, covers a lot of good topics

Hobbit House
beautiful house!

These websites are cob organizations, with more resources, pictures, links and stories. Be sure to check out all of them!

Workshops:

There is no better way to get learn cob than to learn from the professionals. Several different companies host their own workshops to teach new and seasoned cobbers. Most of the time you pay a fee to get hands on experience and help build a cob structure. Some companies consider your hard work a trade for instruction, so search for some workshops! Most of them provide food or bathing/restroom facilities or work out a system to cover everyone's needs, and you camp on their land.

Here's a link to one site that lists a few

There are lots of projects to start out small if you want to test out how to make cob. You can build and oven, outside stove, hottub, bench, covered patio, workshop, studio, garden wall, guest house, etc. My brother and his wife are finishing up their cob hot tub. They said it works awesome and the materials were inexpensive, easy to mix (they used the tarp method recommended by Becky Bee), easy to apply, and a lot of messy fun.

quite a bit of cobbing left to do here, but the stovepipe and fire pit and tub is in place with some cob at the bottom.

Hope you enjoy all the links!!
